One night you may be sleeping in a swish pad with Robbie Naish fluttering around and the next night you could be shivering in the back of a van. Life on the road is not all what it’s meant to be on the PKRA.
Naish sponsored rider Sam Light said life on the road is ``Pura Vida’’ which is Spanish for pure life.
``I am very lucky to be given the opportunities that I have and couldn’t have done it without the support from my parents, they could have pushed me into going to university then id just be another plod,’’ he said.
Between competitions Sam travels back to England for a dose of home style cooking, his girlfriend and a bit of part time work.
``It’s an amazing sport and it’s not about the money, it the lifestyle you get to live, the places you visit and the people you meet,’’ he said.
``I’m very grateful and realise how lucky I am, my parents haven’t been to half the places I’ve been.’’
Sam’s debut year began in style in Hawaii when choppers swish pads and luxury cars were on call to film Naish team riders.
``We shot at secret spots around the island including the world famous surf spot Windmills,’’ he said.
``It was cool to shoot at Kite Beach I stood there after the session and thought this is kiteboarding history.
“Riding at Kite Beach with Lou Wainmen was a dream. I grew up idolising people like him and now I’m a part of it.’’
Sam finished a respectable 13th in the first competition of year at Port Leucate, near Perpignan, France.
This was despite being ill-equipped and way over powered riding an 8metre kite in up to 50 knot winds.
``I sorted my self out and got through a couple of heats beating Randy Hereman and came up against Mario Rodwald which was a close heat but it went well,’’ he said.
