Pioneering land kiting in QLD

By Mike Hall

I started land kiting after seeing a bloke named Steve down at Pelican Park Redcliffe, near Brisbane just over a year and a half ago.
I went over and started talking to him and found out that the kite he was flying with a stunt kite, different to what I’d flown quite a few years ago when I used to make kites at school.
Steve then got a traction kite out of his car and he set it up and showed me how to fly, it was a Peter Lynn 1.5m.
The wind was around 10 to 15 knots and as soon as I got hold of the kite I thought this thing really moves and seems to have quit a bit of pull.
Now the fun was just about to start for me.
I went into Briskites, which is owned by Jason Kitchen and bought a Prism E2 stunt kite.
I then went on to buy two traction kites, A Libre vampire 4m2 and a Peter Lynn vibe 1.6 m2.
Redcliffe kiter Jens invited me to go and have a go in his buggy and I had my first OBE (out of buggy experience) which left me battered, bruised and determined to get it right.
But the thrill was awesome; I met Marty James (AKA Just Kitesurf) at around this time too at Brighton Beach with his son Elijah James (Tiger).
I had talked to Marty on Extreme Kites forum before and from there I started to meet more great people.
I attended my first official event at Bribie Island in January 2008.
Two up in the bug and trailer then taking turns at giving people rides and having a go myself brought kite flying and steering the buggy together for me .
I had an awesome day with Jens, Marty, Jeremy (AKA Westfire), Mark (Sluggo), Grant, Paul (AKA Condor Man) and Tiger.
This brought together ``the Queensland crew’’ which now have around 15 members and we meet most weekends.
